Senior Human Rights Officer

About the role

The Senior Human Rights Officer will lead operational and structural human‑rights work for Hoffnungszeichen | Sign of Hope, reporting directly to the Chairperson of the Executive Board. The role is based in Nairobi (Kenya) with the possibility to work from Uganda or Addis Ababa, and starts as soon as possible.

Key responsibilities

• Research and analyse human‑rights situations in selected countries and produce scientific reports for internal and external audiences.
• Design and implement advocacy initiatives, providing input for public‑relations and communication strategies.
• Integrate human‑rights principles into programme design and ensure a rights‑based approach across all departments.
• Develop and deliver trainings for staff and partners on human‑rights standards.
• Strengthen monitoring and reflection mechanisms in collaboration with technical teams.

Required profile

• University degree in social sciences or law, preferably with a human‑rights focus.
• At least three years of professional experience in a human‑rights‑related field.
• Strong analytical abilities, empathy for vulnerable groups, and excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Reliable, independent, goal‑oriented and meticulous work style.
• Fluent English; German language skills are a plus.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
