Nurse Mentor – On‑site in Sierra Leone

About the role

Mercy Ships is seeking an experienced Nurse Mentor to work on‑site in Sierra Leone. The role focuses on developing and delivering nurse mentoring projects in surgical wards and operating rooms of a partner hospital, with the aim of strengthening the local surgical system.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, coordinate and maintain communication between partner hospitals, Mercy Ships ship departments and the in‑country ETA team.
• Collaborate with hospital leaders and stakeholders to plan and implement culturally appropriate training, quality‑improvement projects and simulation activities.
• Document project processes, maintain records, and prepare internal and final reports for ETA projects.
• Support integration of on‑ship skills sharing into hospital policies and procedures.
• Assist with baseline assessments, record mentoring statistics and provide narrative reports to the PDMELD team.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with an active license in the home country and a nursing degree equivalent to BScN or higher.
• At least three years of recent peri‑operative or operating‑room nursing experience.
• Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams, solve problems and adapt to resource‑limited settings.
• Strong cross‑cultural awareness, excellent written and oral communication skills, and fluency in English (French B1/B2 preferred).
• Commitment to living in‑country full‑time and contributing to community life.

Required skills

• Peri‑operative / operating‑room nursing expertise.
• Quality‑improvement methodology and change‑management experience.
• Curriculum design, development and simulation‑based training.
• Valid driver’s license with International Driving Permit (preferred).
