Critical Care Nurse – ICU (Koidu)

About the role
The Critical Care Nurse will deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care to critically ill, post‑operative and high‑dependency patients in the ICU/CCU at Koidu (MCOE/KGH). The role demands rapid assessment, continuous monitoring, early detection of deterioration, and timely emergency response while working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to critically ill, high‑dependency, maternal, newborn and post‑operative patients.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments, monitor clinical trends and promptly escalate any deterioration.
- Respond to emergencies and perform BLS/ACLS interventions.
- Safely administer medications, IV therapy, oxygen, blood products and prescribed treatments.
- Operate and troubleshoot ICU/CCU equipment, including cardiac monitoring systems.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, structured handovers and EMR entries.
- Implement infection‑prevention, safeguarding and patient‑safety standards.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care.
- Provide compassionate communication and support to patients’ families.
- Participate in quality‑improvement projects, audits, mentorship and ongoing professional development.
Required profile
- Diploma, HND or Degree in Nursing from a recognised institution.
- Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Sierra Leone with a valid practising licence.
- Minimum two years post‑registration experience in hospital practice; critical‑care, high‑dependency or emergency experience preferred.
- Must not be PIN‑coded staff.
- Strong mental fortitude, stress‑management skills and ability to maintain professionalism in unpredictable situations.
Required skills
- Operation and troubleshooting of ICU/CCU equipment.
- Cardiac monitoring systems.
- Point‑of‑care testing (ABG, blood glucose).
- BLS and ACLS certification.
- ETAT, BEmONC/EmONC certification (preferred).
- Electronic Medical Record (EMR) documentation.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
