Head Janitor

About the role

The Head Janitor will lead the housekeeping team at Koidu Government Hospital, ensuring that all patient, caregiver and staff areas meet the highest cleanliness and hygiene standards. This position combines supervisory duties with hands‑on cleaning tasks and requires strict adherence to PIH/MOH protocols and national health regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise, train and mentor a team of janitors, assigning daily tasks and monitoring productivity.
• Conduct regular inspections and complete daily checklists, reporting issues to the Senior Hygiene Officer.
• Perform cleaning duties including floors, windows, restrooms, high‑traffic zones and bio‑hazard spill response.
• Maintain and service cleaning equipment, ensuring it is in proper working order.
• Manage inventory of cleaning supplies, ordering and restocking as needed while controlling costs.
• Enforce health and safety regulations, proper use of chemicals and personal protective equipment.
• Provide safety training, identify hazards and coordinate special cleaning projects with other departments.
• Prepare performance reports and collaborate with management to meet departmental objectives.

Required profile

• Technical Certificate, preferably in Hygiene and Sanitation.
• Minimum 2 years experience as a Head Janitor or similar role in a healthcare setting.
• Strong initiative, self‑motivation and commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles.
• Ability to work long hours under stressful conditions.
• Familiarity with Sierra Leone Ministry of Health standards and hospital IPC procedures is a plus.
