Livestock Specialist

About the role

The Livestock Specialist will provide technical leadership for livestock‑related interventions within the Joint United Nations Nutrition Programme in Sierra Leone. Reporting to the FAO Representative and the Assistant FAOR, the incumbent will work closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, UN partners, implementing agencies and community groups.

Key responsibilities

• Lead planning and implementation of poultry, apiculture and small‑livestock interventions.
• Develop climate‑resilient, nutrition‑sensitive intervention models and integrated crop‑livestock systems.
• Design and deliver training on animal husbandry, feed management and disease prevention.
• Strengthen extension services through farmer field schools, demonstrations and field visits.
• Support transparent beneficiary identification, emphasizing women, youth and vulnerable households.
• Coordinate disease prevention and control measures with the Ministry of Agriculture.
• Promote improved productivity through better feeding practices, improved breeds and bio‑security measures.
• Facilitate development of livestock value chains, market linkages and income‑generating opportunities.

Required profile

• Technical expertise in livestock, poultry, apiculture and integrated farming interventions.
• Experience with climate‑resilient and nutrition‑sensitive agricultural approaches.
• Ability to collaborate with government ministries, UN agencies, implementing partners and community groups.
