Driver / Field Assistant

About the role

IITA is looking for a Driver/Field Assistant in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on a 2-year renewable contract. The post holder conveys staff and partners to locations within and outside the station for official activities and drives and maintains official vehicles efficiently as instructed by the supervisor.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out driving duties as instructed by the Supervisor.
• Assist Field supervisors with field activities, including field plot establishment and data collection.
• Drive the vehicle within and outside the duty station to transport personnel, materials and supplies, including out of hours, weekends and public holidays as required.
• Record all vehicle logbooks, including mileage, maintenance history and fuel consumption.
• Report potential mechanical faults as soon as they are discovered.
• Perform routine vehicle maintenance checks and make sure vehicles are fueled when due.
• Provide support to Technical Officers during field assignments.
• Perform any other job-related tasks assigned by the Supervisor.

Required profile

• National Diploma in a related course with at least 2 years' experience, or O' Level with at least 6 years' experience in a similar role in a well-structured environment.
• Valid driver's licence and national identification card.
• Excellent communication skills in English and Creole (reading, writing and speaking).
• Fluent English and Creole, with knowledge of driving across Sierra Leone.
• Good knowledge of defensive driving and awareness of driving rules and regulations.
• Ability to work under pressure, initiative, integrity, a positive attitude and strong team spirit.
