Mathematics & Statistics Instructor for AI & Data Analytics

About the role

WIATech, a new technical institute in Waterloo, Sierra Leone, is looking for a Mathematics & Statistics Instructor to lead two core programmes – Mathematics for Machine Learning (MTH 85) and Applied Statistics for the Data Analytics diploma (DAT 200). You will deliver the mathematical theory while our engineering faculty co‑teach the Python implementation, so no coding background is required.

Key responsibilities

• Teach linear algebra, calculus, probability and optimisation concepts directly applied to machine‑learning algorithms such as gradient descent, PCA and cross‑entropy.
• Deliver applied and inferential statistics topics needed for data‑analytics, including hypothesis testing, regression, forecasting, A/B testing and experimental design.
• Present mathematics on the board and on paper using real‑world examples, while engineering colleagues run parallel coding labs.
• Conduct weekly low‑stakes oral check‑ins and a final oral defence as part of WIATech’s defence‑led assessment model.

Required profile

• Strong quantitative background with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and patiently.
• Experience in applied/inferential statistics is strongly preferred; willingness to develop this expertise is acceptable.
• Teaching‑by‑example mindset, focusing on real problems rather than abstract theory.
• Bonus: exposure to data‑analysis software, machine‑learning concepts or statistical tools.
