Neonatologist / Pediatrician

About the role

This full‑time position is for a board‑certified Neonatologist/Pediatrician to join the Pediatrics team at the Maternal Center of Excellence within Koidu Government Hospital, Kono, Sierra Leone. The role leads the Neonatal ICU, provides bedside care for newborns and, when needed, supports the broader pediatric population.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality clinical care in the NICU, including management of pre‑term infants and newborn complications.
• Perform central line catheterizations (jugular, subclavian, femoral, tunneled) for neonates and children.
• Conduct point‑of‑care and transfontanelle ultrasound examinations, as well as preliminary echocardiography.
• Manage airway emergencies and operate invasive and non‑invasive mechanical ventilation systems.
• Perform umbilical vein catheterizations in newborns.
• Collaborate with obstetric and primary health care teams to improve perinatal care.
• Teach, mentor, and supervise junior medical and nursing staff.
• Develop and support quality‑improvement and research initiatives in neonatal health.

Required profile

• Board‑certified in Neonatology or Pediatrics with extensive experience in neonatal critical care.
• Demonstrated ability to work in low‑resource settings and collaborate with local health ministries.
• Strong commitment to clinical education, guideline development, and health‑system strengthening.
